The responsible officer dealing with a child should throughout the process assess the best interest of the child. In assessing the best interest of the child, due account has to be taken to certain factors such as: family reunification possibilities; the child's wellbeing and social development, taking into particular consideration the child's background; safety and security considerations; and the views of the child in accordance with his/her age and maturity (Article 23(2) RCD recastRecital 33 APD recast).
