sexual orientation

refers to each person’s capacity for profound emotional, affectional and sexual attraction to, and intimate and sexual relations with, individuals of a different gender or the same gender or more than one gender;

serious illness

Generally, 'serious’ may be understood to refer to illnesses that are life-limiting or which lead to the person being incapacitated for a period of time due to the illness.

Definitions of serious illness may vary in Member States.

responsible officer

any official who could potentially be involved and interact with an applicant for international protection;

It is used both in terms of identification and responsibility to address the special needs of the applicant. 

privacy

Privacy refers to freedom from intrusion into one's personal matters and personal information (e.g. personal data protection laws).

Privacy and confidentiality safeguards must be put in place and applied regarding information handling, according to national practice.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape, or other violent personal assault. Symptoms of PTSD fall into four categories described as re-experiencing, avoidance, negative cognitions and mood, and arousal.

National Referral Mechanism

The National Referral Mechanism (NRM) is a framework for identifying victims of human trafficking and ensuring they receive the appropriate protection and support process. NRM is designed to make it easier for all the different agencies that could be involved in a trafficking case, for example, police, immigration authorities, local authorities, and non-governmental organisations to co-operate; to share information about potential victims and facilitate their access to advice, accommodation and support.
